Alberto J. Bernal is Chief Global Strategist for the institutional desk at XP Investments, where he advises institutional investors on global macroeconomics, emerging markets, monetary policy, and cross-asset strategy. Widely regarded as one of Latin America’s leading macro strategists, Mr. Bernal has spent more than two decades at the intersection of global finance, sovereign markets, and economic policy.

Prior to joining XP, he was Partner and Head of Research at Bulltick Capital Markets, Managing Director of Emerging Markets Fixed Income Research at  Bear Stearns Companies LLC in New York, and Head of Latin America Economic Research at IDEAglobal. Throughout his career, he has advised major institutional investors, asset managers, and policymakers on macroeconomic trends and emerging-market risk.

Mr. Bernal is a frequent commentator in global financial media and a regular participant in high-level economic, policy, and investment forums worldwide. His work has earned recognition from leading Latin American institutions and publications, including distinctions as Colombia’s most accurate economist and one of the region’s foremost economic thought leaders by the Inter-American Development Bank.

He was a research scholar at Columbia University’s Chazen Institute and holds a Master’s degree in Macroeconomics from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. He received his Honors Bachelor of Science in Economics from University of New Orleans.

In 2018, he was selected by former President Iván Duque to serve on Colombia’s financial markets reform commission, contributing to the modernization framework for the country’s debt and capital markets.
